A little about Lara Leahy – Co-Founder
Building a media company in this day and age is so fraught. In an industry that is going through the wringer with so much change – in what you can report, who you can write about, working out where the best place is to report it and how you can report it can leave you asking, WHY?
But the essence of Journalism hasn’t changed – keeping people informed in a factual, relevant manner. Working out the rest was made simpler when our journey was influenced by LINA, the Local & Independent News Association. Joining them helped us wade through so much – they had their recent annual summit.
It has been an incredible way to kickstart this venture – we have both learned so much. We have had passions sparked with new aspects to the industry, been honed by reviewing the high standards that are expected by our peers and gathered countless innovative ways to convey important methods to keep you informed…
We have been busy sponges! There has hardly been time to process all the things we would like to bring to our community, but we will. The Ballina News Daily will be an agile, evolving service, giving you new insights, asking the hard questions and providing you with confidence and a voice.
We are local people writing for the local community and I look forward to meeting you.
“Hyperlocal journalism really helps keep misinformation and disinformation at bay. If local people with real responsibilities and obligations report truthfully in their region, it has to help the overall balance.”

A little about Rod Bruem – Co-Founder
Ballina had been well served by local newspapers for more than a century, however the closure of the Advocate five years ago really left a void. I really felt it most during my time serving as a local councillor when I noticed civic affairs were not being properly covered and often the little bit of coverage coming from media outlets outside our shire was inadequate or just missed a truly local perspective.
It has been great working with Lara Leahy to bring back a local news voice for the people of Ballina Shire. a presence we hope will be sustainable and there for the Ballina community for the next 100 years.
Our Mission: To be a fair, accurate and reliable voice supporting the people of Ballina Shire
“The 2011 flood emergency in the South Burnett led to a news blackout locally as all the highways were cut so newspapers couldn’t be printed or delivered. People began relying on inaccurate Facebook rumours. We had a mini online news service which we ramped up during the emergency and then in 2012 turned into a proper online newspaper.”
