Good news for Lennox basketball lovers, with $116,000 coming from the NSW Government for a new facility opposite Epiq.
Billy Kilburn, a local 16 year old basketballer can’t wait for the court to be completed, having had to give up training at one point because the nearest place to play was in Ballina.
“Yeah, 100 percent, this will be great especially for the younger kids getting started. I’ve been playing at home on my hoop since I was probably 10.”
Local councillors led by basketball enthusiast Eva Ramsey have been pushing for improved courts around the shire to benefit young people in particular.
“We now have one in Cumbalum, Alstonville, Wardell and the one in Ballina is refurbished. We are trying to spread them around so there is something for everyone,” Cr Ramsey said.
Cr Kiri Dicker said the location on the corner of Snapper and Hutley Drive was ideal as the Epiq estate has had an explosion of young families.
“There’s not a whole lot for teenagers. We’ve got the youngest population in the shire and people have been asking for a basketball court for a long time.”

The $116,000 NSW contribution for the court has been facilitated by local MP Tamara Smith.
“Basketball fosters teamwork, improves physical fitness and enhances mental health and wellbeing, all while building discipline, communication skills and confidence,” Ms Smith said.
The councillors stated they want to get the court completed as soon as possible, but the design is still in its early planning stages.
Cr Michelle Bailey said she was pleased that the project design will allow for some space on the parcel of land for local businesses.
