With the passing of the Pope Francis in the final hours of Easter in Australia, yesterday, in a statement, Bishop Greg Homeming sends words of what has come to pass and comfort for the community.
“At the news of Pope Francis’ death, we are left with an inner emptiness. The death is not unexpected. In fact, there is a sadness and a joy. After much suffering he has gone to God. What remains for us is a memory of a great man, a wonderful shepherd. Emptiness invites us to ponder Francis the man and what he has done,” Bishop Greg said.
The Pope leaves a legacy of compassion, equality, and humility. He spent time reaching out to marginalised communities saying the church should not be for the wealthy, only. He led by example, choosing to embrace a more humble lifestyle.
“Pope Francis impressed us with his simple humility, openness to God and the people of our world. Listening deeply, he was able to hear with his heart and see Jesus in others. He did not judge, rather he loved by touching hearts,” Bishop Greg said.
At St Francis Xavier Catholic church, Ballina, special prayers are offered up to the Pope over the Easter liturgies. Bernadette Conroy, Parish Secretary, commented that the services were well attended by locals and visitors over the weekend.
“He was a man of prayer. It is our turn to pray for him. Eternal rest grant unto him and let perpetual light shine upon him.”
There are nine days of mourning following a pope’s passing, in which the funeral for Pope Francis will take place. For those that feel they would like to offer up some prayers at St Francis Xavier Church, it is open every day, and will have special masses offered up for him at midday on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and a special mass on Friday at 9am for Anzac Day as well.

The Vatican reports Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936, passed away from a stroke and heart attack after serving as the 266th pope since March 13th, 2013. He served for 12 years, longer than the average papal term of around 7 years.
Further events to commemorate the Pope’s life and legacy are being planned by the Diocese of Lismore and will be released shortly.
