Resonating with the live music scene around Ballina

Resonator Music and Tuition has officially opened up its doors to a diverse range of musical service for the area.

Adam Biggs who has worked in music his whole life, acquired the shop in April, and has been busy doing renovations integrating the new line of services.  The music shop will still include selling musical instruments and paraphernalia, but there will be additional musical facilities that will be a valuable addition for the region’s musical growth.

“We are not just about having guitars lining the walls for sale.

“I’m interested in what happens around a music community. To me, it’s the events, the clinics and workshops and shows and interesting ways to engage with people in this industry,” said Adam in regards to his new passion project, “I just want to get people excited. We’re very excited!”

As part of the change, they have added 10 recording studios, and their aim is to “ make it accessible to people who otherwise might not be able to afford to go into a studio situation.”

The space isn’t just for music professionals.  Adam is looking for anyone who wants a venue for music entertainment, performance, or just experimenting, “Whether it’s a comedy club, or Veterans Affairs, NDIS programmes and all sorts of things, we’ve been saying, yes, please come to us and tell us what you want.”

Adam invites you to call in and talk about ideas where they can help the community, “It’s a large space, and I’m really happy for people to bring me ideas about what we can do with it.”

As part of this venture, Adam is delving into a passion – to support opportunities for youth learning music.  Adams music career, which has seen him travel Australia and the world supporting musicians and being involved with shows like Bluesfest, started in Ballina after he moved here at the age of four.  That was back in the 80’s.

“I benefited greatly from the music programmes at Ballina primary. Mac Morley was the head of the band, and there was a fellow, David Dollary, who was huge influence on all of us musically.

“Dave was this wonderful old man who had been in the Royal Navy Band and travelled around the world. He retired in Ballina, and basically dedicated his whole retirement to the Ballina Primary School Band.

“I have this really lovely association with David from that time – he was this linchpin of that school music community. He gave his time for free. He was this incredibly energetic, super enthusiastic man who was passionate about music and kids getting involved in music.”

This inspiration has left a mark on Adam, who is putting together a legacy fund in David’s name to assist schools with musical education.

“Where we can, at our own cost, provide instruments for schools that can’t afford them, or repairs for schools that can’t afford them – things like that.”

“For me, music is about collaboration.   It’s about engaging with people and learning about what people bring to the table as musicians and what that does for other people.”

Last night at their Grand Re-Opening concert, they had a lot of music industry people in attendance, as they showcased some of the shop’s new features – including the new in-store performance stage.

“Last night was a massive success. We had around 150 people celebrating with us,” said Adam, very pleased with the result.

If you missed out, there is plenty more to look forward to, including their first special guest visitor, Adam Miller and his trio who will be performing next week as part of their “Timing” album tour.  “To top it off, the world renowned clinician and endorsed artist is going to be running an exclusive clinic.”
