Ballina had its moment in the national spotlight as Channel Seven’s Sunrise broadcast live from the Shelly Beach Cafe, with Summerland Farm taking centre stage.

Despite all the wet weather, the skies cleared for Sunrise weather presenter Katie Brown, who was treated to a spectacular sunrise over the Pacific.

Among the local highlights was Molly O’Neill from Summerland Farm, who joined Katie live on air to showcase the farm’s incredible work and introduce viewers to a new avocado variety.

“We’re really proud to be growing the Fuerte avocado,” Molly explained. “It looks similar to a Shepard, but it’s creamier, has a thinner skin, and a higher oil content—which is great for flavour and even better for your skin!”

Katie admitted she was usually a Hass fan but was excited to try the new variety. “I’ll definitely give it a go!”

But avocados are just the beginning at Summerland Farm, according to Molly, who is the Tourism and Hospitality Manager.

“We’re a working farm based in the Alstonville hinterland . We grow macadamias as well, but we’re also a social enterprise. Right now, we employ around 150 people with a disability across various industries here on-site.”

Molly also shared exciting news: Summerland Farm will soon launch wheelchair-accessible immersive farm tours, reinforcing their commitment to inclusion and accessibility.

“It’s about creating an experience everyone can enjoy,” she said.
