Regional News Review – Missing WWII sub found, flood looting and star gazer alert

A new scientific survey has revealed a Japanese submarine missing since World War Two could be located off the North Coast.

The study by Heritage NSW suggests that there’s “strong evidence” the lost submarine involved in the wartime attack on Sydney could be off the coast somewhere east of Coffs Harbour..

The research has been released to mark the 83rd anniversary of the Japanese midget submarine attack on Sydney Harbour on the night of May 31, 1942.

Heritage NSW Director Tim Smith says the state department has undertaken new detailed research looking at the movements of Japanese Navy submarines targeting merchant vessels along the Australian east coast during the war.

“214 people killed and 23 ships sunk in NSW waters between 1941 and 1944. The research shines new light on this dark period of our history and adds weight to the hypothesis of where the long lost I-178 submarine is located.”

This information, combined with eyewitness evidence of an oil slick the following day off Nambucca heads leads the study to recommend a seabed survey in this region to find a submarine and bring closure to living descendants of the seafarers who lost their lives.

Shock Drug Charge:

Sarah Morrow, Lismore’s Book Warehouse co-owner, has pleaded guilty to five different charges involving the supply of prohibited drugs, the Lismore App reported this week. Two of these charges are for commercial quantities.

This is part of the outcome of a sting last year covering the wider Northern Rivers region. A vehicle pulled over in Chinderah, resulted in the arrest of three people in July. The arrest resulted in search warrants for places in the Tweed, Evans Head and the Gold Coast.

A range of weapons, including guns and knives, and drugs including cocaine and methamphetamine, fireworks and around $40,000 in cash.

Three additional people were arrested in the operation, including Ms Morrow.

In August, Ms Morrow pleaded not guilty, and in September, was granted conditional bail after being charged with 15 offences.

A hearing on July 16th by Magistrate Dakin will pronounce her sentence.

In Flood News to our South:

As the Mid North Coast grapples with the aftermath of devastating floods, many in the Northern Rivers are reminded of the darker moments experienced here following the 2022 flood event.

Early Saturday morning (31 May), police arrested a 45-year-old man in Taree. Officers allege he was found carrying a range of suspected stolen items, including a television, vacuum cleaner, electrical goods, jewellery, and housebreaking tools. He was also allegedly in possession of methylamphetamine and another prohibited drug.

The man was taken to Taree Police Station and charged with multiple offences, including possessing suspected stolen goods, carrying housebreaking implements, and drug possession. He was initially refused bail but later granted conditional release ahead of a court appearance in June.

This is the fifth looting-related arrest in the region during this flood event. Police say they will continue increased patrols to deter crime and support flood-affected communities during recovery.

In Missing persons:

A man that was reported missing on April 30th, Nicholas Cantwell, aged 41, known to frequent areas from Lismore to Byron Bay, was located on Monday last week.

In Real Estate:

The Beach Hotel in Byron Bay, known as the top pub, has sold for a whopping $140 million dollars.

The pub was bought by Scott Didier, Group CEO for the John Lyng Group (construction firm).

Real Commercial report that it is the second highest sum paid for a pub in Australia.  In 2022, the Crossroads Hotel in Casula, in Sydney’s southwest, was bought for $160 million.

In the Night Sky:

An Aurora alert has been issued as favourable viewing of the Aurora Borealis is expected over the next 2 to 3 nights.  Solar activity coupled with clear conditions will likely produce the ability to witness the Aurora as far north as Queensland.
