A feel-good moment for the team at Marine Rescue Ballina this week as they bid a temporary farewell to the unit’s youngest radio operator.
Sunday marked the final shift for Ella Berridge before the 21-year-old heads to the United States to complete the next stage of her Marine Science degree.
A bright and dedicated teammate, according to her fellow volunteers, Ella has been a regular and reliable voice in the radio tower, helping to keep our local waters safe.
Unit commander Sharon Clark said Ella’s passion for the ocean and commitment to community service have made her a standout among her peers.
Despite the bittersweet goodbye, Ella has given a firm promise to return — not only to resume her duties in the radio room, but with a bold vow to one day become Marine Rescue Ballina’s longest-serving volunteer.
During her final shift, Ella shared a moment of excitement with a fellow radio operator Brad Fisher who also happens to fly the unofficial air wing support plane.
Ella reported numerous whale sightings from the Marine Rescue Radio Tower — a breathtaking view in itself.
To celebrate the occasion and deepen her understanding of whale migration, Ella was invited to take to the skies with Captain Brad, one of the latest additions to the Marine Rescue team and a former Qantas pilot.
From the air, the pair were treated to an unforgettable aerial perspective of the humpback whales’ northerly migration.
For Ella, this was more than a scenic flight — it was an inspiring hands-on experience to complement her academic studies and further fuel her passion for marine science.

Sharon Clark said Ella’s story is a reminder of the diverse opportunities available through volunteering with Marine Rescue Ballina.
“From the radio room to the rescue vessels and support roles, there is a place for people of all ages and backgrounds to get involved, learn new skills, and contribute to our community.”
“We wish Ella all the very best in her studies abroad,” Sharon said.
“The door is always open and the radio desk is ready when you’re ready to return.”
