Five up and coming local athletes have been recognised under the Federal Government’s Local Sporting Champions program, receiving funding to support their dreams of competing at higher levels.

The grants, presented by Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan, are designed to ease the financial burden on families and help young people travel to state and national competitions.

Ballina Shire recipients in the latest funding round are: Camryn Anderson from Alstonvale , for Lawn Bowls,

  • Charlotte Sams (Pictured below), from Wollongbar – for Netball
  • Harry Hosking, Alstonville – Hockey
  • Lucinda Barnes, Alstonville – Netball

  • and Lachlan Trease from Alstonville for swimming

“These teenagers have worked hard to earn a place representing the Northern Rivers at the state and national level,” Mr Hogan said.

“This program helps make sure cost doesn’t become a barrier to their continued success.”

The Local Sporting Champions grants provide financial support to young people aged 12 to 18 who are travelling to compete, coach or umpire in their chosen sport.

Mr Hogan said the Northern Rivers has long punched above its weight in producing elite athletes, and supporting young talent now helps build that legacy for the future.

“I encourage any budding champions out there who have the opportunity of competing at a state, national or international event to apply for a grant by contacting my office or checking out the website ausport.gov.au,” Mr Hogan said.
