A state funeral will be held next Monday in Lennox Head to honour Superintendent David Cook, a much-loved and highly respected leader of the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Far North Coast Team.

David “Cookie” Cook passed away suddenly on Saturday July 19 following a short battle with illness.

He was just weeks away from retiring after more than three decades of dedicated service to the RFS.

Cookie began his fire service journey in 1992 as a volunteer with the Lennox Head Bush Fire Brigade.

He formally joined the RFS in 2001, transitioning from his earlier career as a science teacher at Ballina High School. Known for his intelligence, charisma, and fairness.

He quickly rose through the ranks to become Superintendent and Manager of the Far North Coast team.

His leadership and operational expertise were instrumental during major bushfire responses across NSW, Victoria and South Australia.

As Incident Controller for numerous high-stakes operations, Cookie was admired for his calm demeanour, deep knowledge, and his unwavering commitment to both his team and the community.

Superintendent Cook’s service earned him multiple honours, including the National Medal and Long Service Medal.

Beyond the accolades, it was his personal impact — as a mentor, friend and “go-to” figure across the region — that left the deepest impression.

David Cook – served the community with distinction, humility and heart.

The NSW RFS paid tribute in a statement:

“Dave – fondly known as ‘Cookie’ – was a compassionate leader and mentor who would give you the shirt off his back. His dedication was unwavering, and he treated every member with fairness and respect — whether they were a newcomer or a veteran. His passing is a heartbreaking loss for our entire service.”

Another tribute from VRA Rescue NSW Region North remembered him as:

“A respected leader, an outstanding mentor, and a true servant of his community… Cookie brought energy, charisma, and a deep sense of purpose to everything he did. His legacy lives on, and his watch is complete.”

A keen surfer with strong connections to both Lennox Head and Bali, Cookie was affectionately known as “the surfie” in fire service circles, and “the Aussie” within his Indonesian community.

Superintendent David Cook’s state funeral will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, July 28 at the Lennox Head Cultural Centre. All who knew him are invited to attend to pay their respects.
