Proud, Strong and Growing: NAIDOC Week March Celebrates Bundjalung Youth

Bundjalung culture was front and centre in Ballina today as hundreds gathered in sunshine to celebrate NAIDOC Week with a vibrant procession through the heart of town.
Led by local Elders and featuring powerful performances from First Nations dance groups, the annual march celebrated this year’s NAIDOC theme: “the next generation – strength, vision and legacy.”
Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader, who addressed the crowd at the march’s conclusion, praised the energy and leadership of young Bundjalung people.

“You only have to look at the dance performances today to feel hope,” Cr Cadwallader said.
“Their expression, pride and cultural strength was just amazing. It tells us the next generation is in good hands.”
The Mayor said this year’s theme struck a powerful chord with the community.

“It’s a celebration of where we’ve come from, and a powerful call to keep moving forward – guided by our young leaders,” she said.
The procession is one of just three formal marches held in Ballina each year, alongside the ANZAC Day and domestic violence awareness events. Cr Cadwallader said the growing NAIDOC turnout each year was a sign of unity and shared purpose.
“It just goes to show that people want to work together, and that’s the only way lasting change and understanding can happen. Not separately, but side by side.”

This year also marks 50 years since the first NAIDOC Week celebrations were officially held, a milestone that was honoured by community members young and old during the event.
