August might be here, but local doctors say the flu season is far from done — and they’re urging people across the Northern Rivers to get vaccinated before it’s too late.

Flu cases in NSW have surged by more than 78 percent in just one month, rising from 21,000 in June to nearly 38,000 in July.

Despite that, vaccination rates remain lower than in other states.

Dr Rebekah Hoffman from the Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) says there’s still time to act — and for many, the flu jab is free.

“I’ve diagnosed more flu cases in the last few weeks than in the rest of the season combined,” she said.

“People are assuming winter’s almost over and the danger has passed, but flu doesn’t run on a calendar. You can still get hit hard with it well into spring.”

Dr Hoffman said those most at risk — including older residents — are also the least likely to have had their flu shot this year.

Last year, NSW recorded the highest number of flu-related deaths in Australia, accounting for more than a third of all fatalities.

“Vaccination is still the best way to stay out of hospital,” Dr Hoffman said.

“It’s quick, it’s safe, and it’s recommended for everyone aged six months and up.”

The flu vaccine is free in NSW for:

• Children aged 6 months to under 5
  
• Pregnant women
  
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  
• People aged 65 and over
  
• Those with serious health conditions
  

The RACGP has called for the NSW Government to offer free meningococcal B (MenB) vaccines to young children and teens — something already introduced in other states and New Zealand.

“Meningococcal B is a devastating illness, but we have a vaccine that works.” Dr Hoffman said.

“We need to make sure families in NSW aren’t missing out on that protection.”

Residents can access flu shots at local GPs and health clinics across the region — and yes, it’s definitely not too late.
