Ballina Expo Aims to Tackle Volunteer Shortage

Community groups, clubs and not-for-profits organisations are being urged to take part in Ballina’s upcoming Community Connections Expo — a free event designed to help local organisations attract much-needed new members and volunteers.

The expo, aimed at groups based in Ballina’s central A Ward will run from 9am to 12pm on Saturday, August 30 at the Ballina Surf Club, following the success of a similar event in Lennox Head earlier this year, hosted by C Ward Councillors.

Council hopes to stage another Expo on the Plateau hosted by C Ward councillors later in the year.

More than 20 local groups have already registered for the Ballina Expo — from sporting clubs and environmental groups to creative collectives and support services.

The event will give residents the chance to meet passionate volunteers, learn about local activities, and discover how they can get involved.

Volunteer fatigue is real

Ballina Mayor Sharon Cadwallader (pictured) said the events are being help to support groups that are struggling to survive due to a shortage of volunteers

“The need for more has never been greater. “It’s not just Ballina Shire — I think it’s across the board,” she said.

“We’ve had so many disasters, and I think volunteering is suffering fatigue.

“People can only give so much and do so much, and there’s been so much to do that some are getting a little bit weary.

“That’s why we need to train up young people, and we also need to put the call out to those who may have been thinking about volunteering for a long time. Now is the time. The number of active volunteers is sketchy, and we really do need to start engaging new people.”

Cr Cadwallader said she regularly hears from clubs struggling to find helpers.

“When I visit community organisations, I always ask, ‘How are you going for volunteers?’ and I get the same answer — ‘We’d like more.’

“We can always do more with more volunteers. Ballina runs on volunteers, and we’re so proud of those we have. They do an exceptional job.”

The Mayor also emphasised the personal rewards of getting involved.

“People who volunteer often tell me they get more out of it than they put in — the camaraderie of being part of a team, the new skills they learn, and the satisfaction of helping the community.

“Sometimes it unfolds a whole new life for them.”
