Horror start to holiday season on local roads
Police are appealing for information after a deadly 24 hours on Northern Rivers roads, including a fatal crash and a separate head-on collision involving a family with young children.
Father and children escape serious injury
A father and his three young children were lucky to escape injury after a head-on crash on the Bruxner Highway at West Ballina last night.
Emergency services were called about 9.45pm following reports of a collision just west of the BP service centre.
Police were told a utility and an SUV collided, causing the utility to roll before coming to rest on its roof.
The female driver of the utility allegedly removed herself from the vehicle and left the scene before emergency crews arrived.
Despite a search of the surrounding area, she was not located.
Police say inquiries into her whereabouts are continuing.
The driver of the SUV, a 37-year-old man, and his three passengers, all children, were assessed at the scene.
None reported any injuries.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene and investigations are ongoing.
Police are urging anyone with information about the driver, or dashcam footage of the crash, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Man killed in Blue Knob crash
In a separate incident, a man has died following a crash at Blue Knob, about 30 kilometres north of Lismore.
Emergency services were called to Blue Knob Road about 7pm yesterday following reports of a single-vehicle crash.
Police located a vehicle that had collided with a tree before catching fire.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and the body of a man was located inside the vehicle.
While formal identification is yet to occur, police believe the man was aged 27.
A crime scene was established and investigations are continuing.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Police issue holiday warning
With Christmas holiday traffic expected to increase from tonight, police and emergency services have renewed calls for drivers to take care.
Motorists are being urged not to drive when tired, distracted, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Police say the coming days are among the busiest and most dangerous on regional roads.
