Vehicle recovered from Richmond River linked to missing woman

A vehicle has been recovered from the Richmond River in Ballina as police continue forensic examinations following the discovery of human remains earlier this week.

Police divers located the car about midday Friday near Cherry Street after further inquiries by officers attached to Richmond Police District.

Police confirmed the river search began in response to the remains found on the northern bank on Monday afternoon.

Ballina News Daily understands the vehicle recovered from the water matches the description of the Honda CR-V driven by missing Ballina woman Cicily Spiers.

About 3.50pm on February 16, police were called to the Richmond River following reports possible human remains had been located.

As reported by Ballina News Daily yesterday, the discovery prompted a significant police and forensic response along the busy riverfront.

A crime scene was established and the remains were transported for specialist forensic examination to determine identity.

Police say those examinations are continuing.

The vehicle recovered from the river will also undergo forensic testing as investigators work to determine whether the discoveries are connected.

Ms Spiers’ disappearance October last year prompted widespread community concern and support.

In earlier appeals, her family said they remained hopeful she would be found safe and thanked residents for assisting the search.

While some in the community feared the worst as time passed, family members continued to hold onto hope that she would return.

Authorities have not formally identified the remains.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
