From Ballina to Canberra: Tributes flow for much-loved Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell
Much-loved former Lismore mayor Jenny Dowell has died, prompting heartfelt tributes from across the region and the nation.
The respected local government leader passed away aged 75 after a battle with terminal cancer.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese led national tributes, describing Ms Dowell as “a friend and a trailblazer”.
“You’ve served the proud community of Lismore with bravery and boldness, most importantly, always in the service of others,” he said in a recorded message released today.
Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader also paid tribute, describing former Councillor Dowell as a valued colleague.
“Jenny Dowell served her community with integrity,” Cr Cadwallader said.
“We started out in local government in the same year in 2004 and we were campaigned together on issues of importance for the region.
“We used to turn up at things together and present together and she was an incredible force you definitely wanted on your side.”

Cr Cadwallader said she had reached out privately after Ms Dowell publicly shared her decision about her final months.
“Thank you for sharing something so deeply personal with such honesty and courage,” she said.
“I wanted to reach out to you directly and let you know how much respect I have for the way you are approaching this time — with openness, dignity and thoughtfulness for those around you.
“Although we have stood on different sides of politics over the years, I have always appreciated the respect and courtesy we’ve shared.
“That mutual regard has meant a great deal to me, and it is something I will carry with me.
“I hope the days ahead are gentle and filled with the people, memories and moments that bring you comfort and peace.
“Please know you are in my thoughts, and I am wishing you calm, strength and love as you move toward this next chapter on your own terms.”
Ms Dowell had spoken publicly about her end-of-life journey in recent months.
In reporting by ABC North Coast, she was described as approaching death with “openness and willingness to share”, and had revealed she intended to end her life “at a time of her choosing” under voluntary assisted dying laws.
Her funeral will be held at 10am next Tuesday at The Quad on Keen Street in Lismore, a civic project she championed during her time as mayor.
The service will be followed by a private cremation.
Ms Dowell passed away peacefully at her home in Goonellabah, surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her husband Ron of 47 years, her children Georgie, Tim and Kat, and her extended Adamson and Dowell families.
Family and friends are invited to attend the service, which will be held outdoors, with attendees encouraged to bring seating if needed.
A livestream will be available via Binney Family Funerals for those unable to attend in person.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ms Dowell’s honour to the Cancer Council.

Every town needs a Jenny Dowell.
Goodbye, farewell & Amen.
