3am break-in: Stolen BMW tracked live to Casino

A break and enter at Skennars Head has reignited community concern after a BMW SUV was stolen and later found abandoned in Casino.

Police said officers were called to Swell Avenue about 3.10am yesterday, following reports the vehicle had been taken during the incident.

Officers attached to Richmond Police District attended and tracked the vehicle to Albert Street, Casino, where it was located abandoned.

The vehicle was seized for forensic examination and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Resident Jack Lees-Smith said the offenders entered the home to locate the keys before stealing his 2020 BMW X5.

He said the vehicle’s tracking system allowed him to assist police in real time as it was driven north.

“Luckily for us the car has a very good tracker — the police and I were able to track the car live all the way back to Albert Street, Casino,” he wrote on social media.

CCTV footage provided by Mr Lees-Smith shows three alleged offenders at the property, with one appearing to carry a large weapon.

The footage captures the group moving through the driveway area before the vehicle was taken.

The latest incident has also revived memories of a violent break and enter late last year.

On December 30 offenders broke into a property in Headlands Estate and threatened residents with batons before stealing a BMW X3.

Family member Melique Martin later confirmed the vehicle belonged to his parents.

“BMW X3 is my parents’ car,” he wrote on Ballina Crime Reports.

“Hard working nurse and teacher. Saved for ages and now it’s been thrashed and dumped in some bush. This has to be prevented.”

Police later confirmed that vehicle was recovered in bushland near Kempsey with minor damage.

Mr Lees-Smith urged residents with security systems to ensure alarm and siren functions were activated overnight.

Ballina Crime Reports page admin Helen said cameras alone were often not enough to deter offenders.

“When a siren goes off, they run for their lives,” she said.

Police are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
