Ballina Brothers in Court: One Jailed as Two Face Charges

A Ballina man has been jailed after a string of offences, while his younger twin brothers remain before the courts over separate alleged incidents.

Kane Oliss, 24, was sentenced in Ballina Local Court on April 10 after being located following a NSW Police warrant appeal circulated across the Northern Rivers.

He has remained in custody since his arrest in February 2026.

Sentence handed down

Court records show Oliss was convicted on six offences, including stealing, stealing property valued between $2,000 and $5,000, being carried in a vehicle taken without consent, a police pursuit, and driving while disqualified.

Magistrate Kathy Crittenden sentenced him to a total of 14 months in prison, backdated to begin on February 12, 2026.

He will be eligible for parole after seven months, from September 11, 2026, with the sentence due to expire on April 11, 2027.

The court also ordered Oliss to pay $5,299.99 in compensation for a stolen Cannondale road bike.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months over the police pursuit, with a further 12-month disqualification for driving while already disqualified.

In separate domestic violence-related matters heard the same day, the court recorded a breach of a community correction order but took no further action.

Those matters included offences of damaging property and stalking or intimidating in a domestic context.

In a separate matter, 21-year-old twins Jack and Luke Oliss were both charged after a dramatic police arrest in Cumbalum in February.

Police allege that between February 9 and 10, 2026, a chainsaw and a backpack containing roping and climbing gear were stolen from a vehicle parked on Kemp Street. The brothers were searched on Hartigan Street on February 10, where officers allegedly found a backpack believed to have been stolen in the incident.

Police further allege that subsequent searches uncovered bolt cutters, torches, glass pipes, methamphetamine and a driver’s licence in another person’s name.

A stolen e-bike and two knives were also allegedly located.

Jack Oliss faces a string of charges, including possessing a prohibited drug, possessing MDMA in a form other than leaf material not exceeding the small quantity threshold, using an unregistered Class A motor vehicle on a road, failing to stop for police, two counts of possessing goods suspected of being stolen, and custody of a knife in a public place.

Luke James Oliss is charged with possessing goods suspected of being stolen, custody of a knife in a public place, possessing a prohibited drug, possessing equipment for administering a prohibited drug, and two larceny offences involving property allegedly worth more than $2000 but not more than $5000.

Both men are on strict police bail conditions requiring them to live at an approved Ballina address, observe a nightly curfew from 8pm to 6am, and not commit any further offences while on bail. Jack Oliss must also report to Ballina Police Station three times a week.

Jack Oliss with be sentenced May 28 and Luke Oliss will be sentenced May 14 , both in Ballina Local Court.
