Ballina Shire out to bring tourism crown back to the North Coast

Ballina Council is calling on locals to get behind a push to help the shire take out top prize in this year’s NSW Top Tourism Town Awards.

The aim is to go up a couple of places in the 2026 Awards after coming in third in the state last year, behind popular South Coast destinations Kiama and Shellharbour.

Run by the NSW Tourism Association, the awards recognise towns and regions that deliver standout visitor experiences while supporting local jobs, businesses and community life.

Ballina Shire’s Destination and Economy team is now urging the community to get behind the campaign, with public voting open until May 3.

The submission showcases the full breadth of the shire’s tourism offering — from Ballina’s coastal appeal to the village charm of Lennox Head and the rural hinterland character of Alstonville.

It highlights a diverse mix of beaches, waterways and outdoor experiences, alongside a growing hospitality scene and strong local identity.

The entry also reflects ongoing efforts by council, tourism operators and the wider community to strengthen Ballina Shire’s reputation as one of New South Wales’ leading visitor destinations.

Coordinator of Destination and Economy Alanah Ward said community backing could make the difference.

“Ballina has so much to be proud of, and this is a great opportunity to recognise the people, businesses and experiences that make our destination so special,” she said.

“The Top Tourism Town Awards are a chance to showcase Ballina on a broader stage and highlight the strength of our visitor economy.”

Last year’s third-place finish showed Ballina Shire can compete with some of the state’s most established tourism hotspots despite being more remote from Sydney and the major population centre.

The challenge now is to convert that momentum into a top result.

Community votes play a key role in the final outcome, alongside judging criteria that assess a destination’s appeal, accessibility and commitment to tourism.
