Busted after 15 servo drive-offs — $2000 fuel spree alleged

A man will face court after police allege a string of fuel drive-offs across the Northern Rivers.

The 29-year-old was arrested about 7.20pm last night on Dibbs Street at Coraki.

He is due to appear at Lismore Local Court on Monday.

Police will allege he targeted service stations in Lismore, South Lismore and West Ballina 15 times between February 1 and April 13.

More than $2,000 worth of fuel is alleged to have been taken during the spree.

Investigators claim a South Lismore service station was hardest hit, having been targeted 10 times.

It’s also alleged stolen number plates were used during some of the incidents.

He was taken to Lismore Police Station and charged with 15 counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception and two counts of unlawfully possessing number plates.

He was granted conditional bail.

Cost pressures and rising reports

The charges come amid growing reports from service station operators of an increase in “drive-off” fuel thefts.

Industry sources say rising fuel prices and broader cost-of-living pressures are putting more strain on motorists.

Police have not suggested any link between those pressures and this specific case.

Caught on camera

Richmond Police District Commander Superintendent Dave Roptell said modern CCTV systems were helping catch offenders quickly.

“Fuel theft is a serious offence, and police will bring offenders before the court,” he said.

Police are urging service station operators to remain vigilant, including confirming payment methods before activating pumps and recording vehicle details.
