
Ballina man charged after alleged e-bike theft and police pursuit

A Ballina Shire man and another man faced court today after two e-bikes were allegedly stolen from a Byron Bay primary school, sparking a police pursuit.
Police were called about 11.30am on Wednesday after two students’ e-bikes were allegedly taken from the school.
Officers attached to Tweed-Byron Police District were told two men allegedly loaded the bikes into a van before driving away.
A patrol was launched soon after and the van was spotted nearby.
Police will allege the vehicle had been stolen in Queensland.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop, a pursuit began towards Tyagarah.
During the chase, the occupants of the van allegedly threw objects at a police vehicle, including a fuel drum and power tools.
The van stopped at Tyagarah, where two occupants allegedly ran from the vehicle.
The alleged driver, Guyra Cecil Towney, 38, of the Byron Shire, was arrested a short time later.
Jackson Barrow, 34, of the Ballina Shire, was arrested after an extensive search of the area.
Both men were taken to Byron Bay Police Station.
Towney was charged with 11 offences, including two counts of theft, police pursuit, intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle with risk to safety, exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and several vehicle-related offences.
Barrow was charged with four offences, including two counts of theft, intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle with risk to safety and entering enclosed land without lawful excuse.
The two e-bikes have since been returned to the students.
Both men were refused bail and will return to Byron Bay Local Court on June 15.

The two e-bikes were later recovered in bushland on St Helena Road at McLeods Shoot.
