A convicted child sex offender accused of secretly filming women in Ballina public toilets has been taken to hospital after an alleged attack by masked men at a River Street motel.

Emergency services were called to the motel about 10.20 this morning following reports of an assault.

Richmond Police District officers found Shane Roy Jones, 50, injured at the scene.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him before he was taken to Lismore Base Hospital with head injuries. He was reported to be in a stable condition.

The allegations became public today when Ballina News Daily revealed Jones had been charged after police alleged he secretly recorded women using the public toilets at Tamar Street Village last Thursday.

According to police facts tendered to the court, Jones allegedly used a mobile phone to record women by placing the device beneath the gap between toilet cubicles.

Police allege CCTV footage showed Jones in the bathroom area between about 12.30pm and 3pm on May 28, with recordings allegedly beginning about 1pm.

The alleged activity only came to an end when a woman noticed what she believed was a recording device shortly after 2.30pm and contacted police.

Investigators later seized Jones’ mobile phone and allege they located 31 videos and five images connected to the incident.

Police have so far identified 11 women who were allegedly recorded. However, court documents indicate investigators are still attempting to identify all alleged victims, meaning some women who used the toilets that afternoon may still be unaware they were allegedly filmed.

Queensland court reports shows Jones was sentenced to six years’ jail in 2007 after pleading guilty to offences involving the sexual abuse of a four-year-old girl.

A motel manager who witnessed Thursday’s incident alleged two or three masked men entered the property and attacked Jones.

She alleged one of the men repeatedly struck him with his own walking stick while the group yelled “pedo” before fleeing.

Police have commenced an investigation and have not indicated whether they believe the alleged assault was linked to Jones’ criminal history or current court matters.

The motel’s identity has not been published, despite appearing in court documents, because of concerns for the safety and privacy of staff, guests and owners.

The alleged assault comes amid growing scrutiny over Jones’ placement at the motel through a NSW Government-funded emergency accommodation program.

Motel manager Neave said she was never informed of Jones’ criminal history before he was placed there.

“We’ve been trying to find out what’s going on because police are coming nearly every day,” she said.

“This is something that we really need to be told.”

Neave said she had specifically asked police whether there was anything she needed to know.

“We have children in the motel,” she said.

Another resident, Talia, said she only learned of Jones’ background after reading reports on Thursday morning.

“I was disappointed that the police hadn’t advised all of us that live here that have children and grandchildren that come here,” she said.

Talia said there were a number of children staying at the motel, including an eight-year-old child in a nearby room.

Earlier on Thursday, Social Futures referred questions about Jones’ accommodation placement to Homes NSW.

Homes NSW had not responded at the time of publication.

Jones is due to appear in Ballina Local Court on July 16.

No findings have been made in relation to the current charges.

Anyone with information in relation to today’s incident is urged to contact Richmond Police District or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
