Federal Member for Page Kevin Hogan has weighed into the controversy surrounding the departure of veteran television presenter Karl Stefanovic from Channel Nine.
Mr Hogan used social media to criticise what he described as “cancel culture” following reports Stefanovic had parted ways with the network after controversy surrounding his independent podcast.
“Channel 9 has cancelled Karl Stefanovic,” Mr Hogan said.
“Australians believe in the right to speak freely.
“No one should lose their job simply for having a conversation or expressing a different view.
“Cancel culture is corrosive.
“When people fear losing their jobs for expressing views outside the accepted orthodoxy, free debate suffers.”
Stefanovic’s departure from Nine came after controversy surrounding an interview on his independent podcast with British activist Tommy Robinson, with the network saying it was no longer possible for him to continue hosting the Today program while also pursuing the podcast.
The veteran broadcaster had been with the Nine Network for more than two decades.
