A former Xavier Catholic College student from the Ballina region has been remembered as a courageous and selfless young man after being killed while serving as a volunteer combat medic in Ukraine.
Samuel Pedrazzini, 26, died on June 13 while carrying out a combat mission in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, where he was serving with Ukraine’s 3rd Separate Special Operations Regiment.
In a tribute on Xavier Catholic College’s Facebook page he was described as a “popular and much-loved student”.
“Our College Community is deeply saddened to share the tragic news that alumnus Sam Pedrazzini was killed whilst serving in Ukraine,” the college said.
“During his time with us, Sam was a popular and much-loved student, remembered by peers and staff for his warmth, character, and joyful spirit.
“We extend our deepest condolences to Sam’s parents, Leonie and Timothy, and to his many friends and loved ones. Their loss is shared across the broader Australian and Ukrainian community.”
Further details of Sam’s service have now emerged following a military funeral held in western Ukraine.
According to reports, Sam was a former Australian Army soldier who resigned from the Australian Defence Force in 2025 before travelling to Ukraine.
He had reportedly helped train Ukrainian soldiers in the United Kingdom before volunteering at front-line stabilisation points, providing emergency medical treatment to wounded Ukrainian troops.
In May, he joined Ukraine’s elite 3rd Separate Special Operations Regiment as a combat medic.
He was killed while carrying out a combat mission on June 13.
A funeral service was held for him at the Alley of Heroes cemetery in Chukalivka, near Ivano-Frankivsk.
In a Facebook post, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, praised Sam’s dedication and sacrifice.
“Samuel came to Ukraine not out of obligation, but out of conviction,” Ambassador Myroshnychenko said.
“Having served in the Australian Army and trained Ukrainian soldiers, he chose to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukrainians on the battlefield as a combat medic, saving lives until he made the ultimate sacrifice.
“His courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment to freedom will never be forgotten.”
The ambassador also offered condolences to Sam’s parents, Leonie and Timothy, his partner Emily, family, friends and fellow soldiers.
“Rest in peace, Sam. Ukraine will always remember your sacrifice,” he said.
