An abandoned single level home in Kerr Street was severely damaged by fire on Sunday.

About 15 firefighters and four trucks from Ballina, Alstonville and Goonellabah fire stations attended the fire which was reported by calls to 000 about 8.30am.

Using two lines of hose, firefighters were able to contain the fire and there were no reports of injuries,  The house was empty at the time.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Kerr St was closed to traffic while the incident occurred.

NSW Police were also in attendance.
