A young couple walking through a quiet Cumbalum neighbourhood were allegedly set upon by two strangers in an unprovoked daylight attack.
The 16-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were walking along The Ridgeway, between Unara Parkway and Madden Place, about 4.40pm on Tuesday when they first heard yelling coming from a house across the street.
They ignored it and kept walking.
Moments later, they say, a teenage boy and girl ran from a house across the road and allegedly attacked them.
The victims, who did not know their alleged attackers, told Ballina News Daily they had been happy and relaxed moments earlier, enjoying a walk through a neighbourhood they considered safe.
They said the pair had accused them of laughing at them before allegedly crossing the street and assaulting them.
The 14-year-old boy said he was threatened by the male teenager, who allegedly kept one hand in his pocket and pointed it towards him in a way that made him fear he may have been concealing a weapon.
At the same time, the 16-year-old girl was allegedly dragged to the ground by her hair.
She said she was punched, kicked and verbally abused, with her head allegedly slammed into the concrete footpath.
The girl said she curled into the foetal position and covered her head with her arms in an attempt to protect herself.
She said she was also punched in the eye and had earrings ripped from her ears during the alleged attack.
The victims estimate the ordeal lasted about five minutes before it ended.
NSW Ambulance was called to assess the 16-year-old girl following the incident.
Both teenagers say they have been left traumatised by what happened, are struggling to sleep and now feel fearful about being in public.
Police are investigating.
The alleged female attacker was described as being of Indigenous appearance, aged about 15, with long black hair. She was reportedly wearing short black bike pants, a black hoodie and no shoes.
The alleged male attacker was described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged about 15, with short blond hair.
He was reportedly wearing black pants, a grey T-shirt, a black cut-off puffer vest and bright pink Nike shoes.
It’s believed neither of the alleged attackers were residents of Cumbalum and were possibly visiting at the time.
The victims believe people living nearby may have witnessed the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
