A man allegedly carrying a knife and saw has been arrested in dramatic scenes at Ballina Byron Gateway Airport after police say he forced his way into a restricted area.
The incident unfolded just after 9.30am on Monday, during one of the airport’s busiest periods, with the arrest captured on video outside the terminal.
Footage posted to social media shows at least four uniformed police officers and a fifth person involved in the struggle to restrain the 38-year-old and get him into a police paddy wagon.
The man can be heard yelling “get off me” as officers wrestle with him on the roadway before eventually getting him to his feet and into the vehicle.
Police say they were initially called to the airport following reports the man had forced his way into a restricted area.
Officers from Richmond Police District searched the man and allegedly found a knife and a saw among his belongings, which were seized.
He was issued a move-on direction and left the airport, but police allege he returned a short time later in breach of that direction.
Police allege a male senior constable was assaulted as officers attempted to arrest him.
The officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
The video shows the struggle continuing as police attempt to get the man inside the paddy wagon. Even after he is placed inside, he can still be heard yelling as the police vehicle drives from the airport.
The 38-year-old was taken under police guard to Lismore Base Hospital for assessment before later being released into police custody and taken to Lismore Police Station.
He was charged with six offences, including possessing a knife in a public place, failing to comply with a police direction, assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm, resisting police and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.
He was also charged with damaging property valued at $2000 or less.
Police refused him bail and he is due to appear in court today, Tuesday.
