Main construction is underway on the $283.8 million redevelopment of Grafton Base Hospital, with the major upgrade due for completion in 2029.

The project will deliver a new multi-storey acute services building containing an expanded emergency department, operating theatres, medical imaging and MRI services, an inpatient unit and maternity facilities.

The NSW Government added another $20 million to the project in this year’s State Budget to improve maternity services, including dedicated birthing rooms and upgraded inpatient accommodation.

The redevelopment will also provide improved ambulance access from Queen Street, additional parking and new outdoor courtyards.

North Coast Minister Janelle Saffin said the start of main construction was a significant milestone for Grafton and the Clarence Valley.

“With an expanded emergency department, modern operating suites, and upgraded maternity care, this investment gives patients across Grafton and the Clarence Valley access to first-class healthcare right here close to home,” Ms Saffin said.

Hospital services will continue throughout construction, with enabling works and the relocation of specialist outpatient clinics already completed.
