Navigating the Maze of Aged Care: Help available at Ballina Expo

As Australia’s population grows older and policy settings shift, navigating the aged care system has never been more complex, or more important to get right.

Key reforms that were scheduled to take effect from July 1 have now been delayed by the federal government, prompting fresh concern over how Australians will afford and access care in later life.

In a shire like Ballina, where the median age is nearly a decade higher than the national average, these issues hit close to home.

Among the delayed changes is the shift to a new “Support at Home” model, which aims to simplify access to government-funded help for older Australians who want to remain in their homes.

Also postponed is a key mechanism allowing aged care homes to levy higher, service-linked fees on residents  – a change that would have had cost implications for many families.

Ageing Now Comes With a Bigger Price Tag

Experts say the reforms mean that many people entering aged care in the coming year may face higher out-of-pocket costs than expected, and a system that still lacks transparency.

“We’re seeing more and more families blindsided by the complexity and cost of aged care,” said Shane Hayes, founder of Family Aged Care Advocates (pictured above).

“In many cases, people delay having the conversation until there’s a crisis, but by then, you’re on the back foot, and navigating the system can feel overwhelming.”

To help people better prepare, Mr Hayes and fellow aged care advocates are bringing a free Community Ageing Expo to Ballina on Saturday, July 26, at the Richmond Room (next to the pool).

The event will run from 1pm to 4pm, and will feature expert panels, discussion forums and exhibitor booths, all focused on preparing for the ageing journey.

Facing the Questions Sooner Rather Than Later

The expo is being organised by SALT (Seniors and Aged Care Living Transition), a national network of advocates and business owners who help families navigate the personal and financial dimensions of ageing — from lifestyle choices and housing to health needs and long-term care.

“We’ll be covering the questions that matter, like where will I live, what support might I need, and how will I pay for it?  Questions that need answers before you’re forced into making rushed decisions,” Mr Hayes said.

“In our experience, families that plan early not only reduce stress but often find better care options and avoid wasting money.”

Mr Hayes said even if attendees don’t come with specific questions, they’re guaranteed to leave with answers and, hopefully a much clearer understanding of what lies ahead.
