Ballina resident Aiden Sharvell will be among the paramedics recognised on NSW Ambulance Appreciation Day today (Friday, September 19) — an annual event that honours the extraordinary work of frontline responders across the state.
Sharvell, who is currently NSW Ambulance station manager at Byron Bay, said he was “chuffed” to learn he’d been nominated for a community award.
“I only found out yesterday,” he admitted. “But it means a lot.
“Paramedics don’t often see people at their best – usually it’s on their toughest day.
“To have the community stop and say ‘thank you’ really makes a difference.
“Sometimes a simple word of thanks can turn your whole day around.”
Sharvell has worked as a paramedic for nine years, serving across the Northern Rivers including Lismore, Kingscliff and Byron Bay.
He said what he enjoys most is the impact paramedics can make, whether large or small.
“The best thing about this job is knowing you’ve made a difference,” he said.
“That could be saving a life, or simply giving someone the reassurance they need in a tough moment. It all matters.”
NSW Ambulance Chief Executive Dr Dominic Morgan said the day recognises “the exceptional care our people provide in the most critical moments” while strengthening bonds with the community.

Locals will also have the chance to meet ambulance officers and personnel from all emergency services face to face tomorrow at the Ballina Emergency Services Expo.
The free, family-friendly event runs from 10am to 2.30pm and will feature live demonstrations, interactive displays and emergency vehicles for kids (and adults) to explore. Agencies taking part include:
- NSW Police
- NSW Ambulance
- Fire and Rescue NSW
- SES
- RFS
- Marine Rescue
- Red Cross
- Surf Life Saving
Lloyd Isaacson, Ballina Shire Council’s Emergency Management Officer, said the expo is about learning while having fun.
“Whether it’s fire, flood, storm or other natural events, it’s never too early to be prepared,” he said.
“This is a great chance to meet the people who protect us and learn simple steps that can make a big difference in an emergency.”
