Popular local TV newsreader farewelled as Nine cuts deepen
A well-known NBN News presenter has become the latest familiar face to depart the Nine Network as the broadcaster exes jobs nationwide.
Gavin Morris, who joined NBN in 2009 as the 6pm weather presenter, has been a steady presence for viewers across Northern NSW for more than a decade.
His departure comes four years after he stepped into the main presenting role previously held by newsman Paul Lobb, who himself was let go during an earlier round of Nine’s cost-cutting.
Co-presenter Natasha Beyesdorf, who has fronted NBN News for almost 25 years, confirmed Morris’s exit during the close of Monday night’s bulletin.
“Gavin’s been a valued member of the news team for 16 years, bringing us daily weather reports from Newcastle and across northern New South Wales.
“On behalf of NBN News, I’d like to thank Gavin for his contribution and wish Gav and his family all the best,” she told viewers.
Morris had already signalled his departure last Friday, thanking audiences online for “the incredible support over the past couple of weeks”.
He expressed optimism about the future, saying he expects 2026 will be “a phenomenal year”.
Before joining NBN, Morris worked as a senior forecaster with The Weather Channel.
Part of a wider industry shift
Morris’s departure is part of a broader transition as legacy broadcasting organisations continue to face declining advertising revenue and increased competition from digital platforms.
With more audiences turning to online services and social media for breaking news, traditional networks have been consolidating roles and centralising production to reduce costs.
For regional audiences — including communities in the Northern Rivers, where NBN’s nightly bulletin has long been a trusted source of local coverage — these changes have resulted in the loss of several experienced broadcasters over recent years.

Thank you for the explanation – I wondered and will so miss Gav. Hope he lands on his feet somewhere on the up and up.
So do we Robyn! He’s a great TV talent – expect we will see him on air again before too long – on another network perhaps?
He is the best weather forecaster, I will miss him.
The weather just wont be the same without Gav! Hope to see you pop up somewhere else on-screen Gavin.
