UPDATE: Police arrest man after stabbing in Cumbalum

UPDATED – Officers injured in arrest, victim critical 

A man has been stabbed in the chest during an altercation at a home in Cumbalum early this afternoon.

Ballina News Daily understands the incident occurred just after midday at a home in The Ridgeway, involving two men in their late 20s who were known to each other.

Police units and paramedics were quick to arrive at the scene.

The alleged offender fled the home but was located and detained by police shortly afterwards following a brief search of the area.

Neighbours at the scene said they believed the victim suffered a critical injury, possibly a wound to the heart. 

Emergency crews treated the man at the scene before moving him to Cumbalum Soccer Fields, where paramedics spent some time stabilising him.

The helicopter finally departed for Gold Coast University Hospital at approximately 2.30pm.

UPDATE 4pm: Police release new details as victim remains in critical condition

Police have confirmed new details about this afternoon’s stabbing in Cumbalum, including injuries to two officers during the arrest.

Shortly before 12.45pm, officers were called to The Ridgeway following a concern for welfare.

At the scene they located a 34-year-old man suffering a stab wound to the chest.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being airlifted from Ballina Heights Sports Field to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Police arrested a 33-year-old man at the scene.

During the arrest one officer sustained a hand injury and another suffered a bite wound.

Both officers were taken to hospital for assessment and treatment.

A crime scene has been established by Richmond Police District detectives as inquiries continue.
