From Ballina to the big stage: Max’s inspiring showbiz journey is pure joy
There was a time when Max McAuley’s future felt uncertain.
Now, the Ballina entertainer is lighting up stages across the country, touring regional NSW and bringing audiences to their feet.
After winning hearts on Australia’s Got Talent, Max is taking his one-man production Max to the Max on the road — including a homecoming show at Ballina RSL Club.
But behind the costumes, quick changes and laughter is a story that runs much deeper.

A life that’s surprised everyone
When Max was born with Down syndrome, his parents Alex and John say they didn’t know what the future would hold.
Looking back now, those fears feel a long way away.
“If I’d known then what I know now, I wouldn’t have worried the way I did,” Alex said.
Instead, Max’s life has exceeded every expectation — not just for what he has achieved, but for how it has shaped those around him.
The family has found itself immersed in a world they never anticipated — show business.
Alex, who has a background in media, and John, a landscaper, now help bring Max’s productions to life.
“I joke that I’m a dance mum now,” Alex said.
“I’ve learned drag makeup, costumes — everything.”
Born to perform
For Max, performing has always come naturally.
He loves the spotlight — and remarkably, he says he doesn’t get nervous.
Instead, he focuses on what he’s doing and simply steps into the moment.
That instinct carried him onto Australia’s Got Talent in 2022, where he became a standout performer and one of the most memorable acts of the season.
It also led to a friendship with international comedian David Walliams, who Max met during the show.
The pair bonded over humour — including Max’s love of characters from Little Britain, a series known for pushing boundaries.
It’s that same fearless energy Max brings to the stage.

One man, many characters
Max to the Max is a high-energy theatrical experience blending cabaret, dance, burlesque, comedy and drag.
Across the show, Max transforms through a series of characters — from a comedic chef to a disco performer, hip-hop dancer, contemporary artist and flamboyant drag star.
Each transition happens in seconds.
Each performance tells a story through movement, humour and bold physical expression.
Aside from two talented back-up dancers, it’s a one-man show, making it a huge and demanding production.
But those closest to him say Max has a rare ability to hold an audience from start to finish.
“It’s a big ask for any performer,” John said.
“But Max just connects. He brings people with him.”
A Northern Rivers success story
The show has already proven a hit, with earlier performances at the Brunswick Picture House selling strongly across a weekend run.
Now, backed by Create NSW, Creative Australia and the Regional Arts Fund, Max is taking the production on tour.
The 2026 tour at this stage includes Ballina RSL on June 5 and Bellingen Memorial Hall on April 26, with more to come.
The Ballina show is expected to draw strong local support, with many already familiar with Max’s journey.

More than a performance
Beyond the stage, Max continues to be involved in community programs and creative groups across the Northern Rivers.
His career is growing — but his connection to the region remains strong.
For his parents, the journey has been transformative.
For audiences, it’s something simpler.
Joy.
And when Max steps onto the stage in Ballina, that joy will be right at home.
