A Celebration of a Life Well Lived – David Foster Brown
By Petra Helesic
The Ballina community gathered on Sunday, April 12 at Commemoration Park to honour and celebrate the life of David Brown — a humble, generous and deeply kind soul.
David passed away at Ballina Hospital on March 13.
In true David fashion, the farewell was simple, heartfelt and held outdoors in nature. Friends, neighbours and members of the community came together for a free-flowing gathering of music, shared stories and quiet reflection.
There was no formality — just presence, connection and love.
While no family members were in attendance, it was those whose lives David had touched who came together to say goodbye. The gathering reflected the way he lived: open, inclusive and genuine.
David was a familiar and much-loved presence around Ballina. Whether walking through town with his beloved Jack Russell companions, delivering newspapers, or chatting with fellow dog lovers at the beach, he brought a gentle warmth wherever he went.
He was known for his love of music — especially rock — along with his collection of records and books. He enjoyed live performances, including Bluesfest, and was a regular supporter of the local farmers market.
On the day he was taken to hospital for the final time, David had planned a visit to the farmers market — a small but telling reflection of the simple joys that meant so much to him.
From that day, Sunday, March 1, he remained in hospital and did not return home.
David also showed a quiet but profound care for the world around him. He recycled, picked up rubbish from local beaches, and extended his compassion to animals and people alike.

He often rescued and cared for dogs, and as a vegetarian, his respect for animals reflected the way he lived — with care, awareness and heart.
What stood out most was how he related to others.
David loved unconditionally, allowing people to be exactly who they were. He never judged, never imposed, and never made others feel less than.
He lived simply and honestly within his means, never placing burden on others. There was a quiet integrity in the way he moved through life, and people felt safe around him because of it.
A message shared at the memorial from his yoga teacher at Bikram Yoga Byron Bay captured his spirit:

“David was a cherished part of the Bikram Yoga Byron Bay family for well over seven years. He was one of those rare people whose presence made a place feel warmer simply by being there.
Loyal, kind and steady in spirit, he always carried a gentle happiness with him. I never once heard him speak badly of anyone, even when others had not treated him kindly.
What I will always remember most was his gratitude. No gesture was ever too small for David. He appreciated life, kindness and people in a way that is all too rare.
The day David left, a light went out. He will be missed more than words can say, but never forgotten.”
The memorial reflected this same spirit. Music played softly, candles flickered in the coastal breeze, and sunflowers were laid with care around David’s ashes.
Stories were shared. Laughter and tears flowed.
A community came together in a way that felt both natural and deeply meaningful.
David Brown may have lived a quiet life, but his impact was anything but small.
He will be deeply missed by the Ballina community — by those who walked beside him, spoke with him, shared music with him, and experienced his quiet kindness.
David, you did good. I’ll see you on the other side.
