Double demerits in force as police launch Anzac road blitz

Police will flood roads across the state this Anzac Day long weekend as part of a high-visibility crackdown on dangerous driving.

Operation Anzac Day 2026 will run from 12.01am on Friday, April 24 until 11.59pm on Monday, April 27.

Double demerits will apply over the same period for speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and helmet offences.

Police say officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, supported by general duties and specialist units, will be deployed across highways, regional areas and metropolitan roads.

There have been 108 lives lost on NSW roads so far this year. That is five more than at the same time last year.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley said motorists should expect to see officers out in force.

“Let there be no doubt,” Ms Catley said.

“NSW Police officers will be out in force this long weekend and they will be targeting the behaviours we know put lives at risk on our roads.

“This is a high-visibility operation, and drivers can expect to see police on highways, in regional areas and across our metropolitan road network.

“There is no excuse for speeding, using your mobile phone, or incorrectly wearing a seatbelt. These are not just offences, they are choices – and they could cost you your life.”

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Trent King, said every driver had a responsibility to make safe choices.

“We are seeing far too many lives lost on our roads, and every one of those deaths is a tragedy that didn’t need to happen,” he said.

“Our message this long weekend is simple: slow down and pay attention when driving.

“This operation isn’t about issuing tickets. It’s about stopping dangerous behaviour before it ends in a fatal crash.”

He said drivers who took risks should expect to be stopped and tested.

Police are urging motorists to plan their trip before heading away, including by using Live Traffic NSW and other Transport for NSW journey planning tools.

Anyone who sees dangerous driving is urged to report it to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
