A 34-year-old father has died after an alleged assault in Tweed Heads South, with police investigating how he made his way home before collapsing in his driveway.

Emergency services were called to a home on Seaview Crescent about 2am on Saturday following reports a man had been assaulted.

Police allege the man was involved in an altercation at The Hermitage in Tweed Heads South before leaving the scene and travelling less than a kilometre to his family home.

According to police, the man suffered serious injuries and was found in the driveway of the Seaview Crescent property about 40 minutes after the initial emergency calls. Despite treatment by NSW Ambulance paramedics, he died at the scene.

Investigators are now trying to piece together his final movements and determine exactly how he returned home.

Detectives established crime scenes at both locations and spent Saturday examining evidence and retracing the man’s movements.

Nine News reported witnesses heard shouting and screaming before the incident, while a metal pole has become a focus of the investigation.

A 31-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were arrested a short time later at a nearby home.

Police confirmed the woman has been charged with hindering a police investigation, while the man remains under investigation. No charges have been laid against him at this stage.

The deceased man has not yet been formally identified. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
