A Lennox Head teacher who rose through the ranks to become one of the region’s most respected education leaders has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to education.

Michele McDonald, Assistant Director of Learning Services for the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools, was recognised in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours for a career spanning more than 30 years in education.

Ms McDonald has worked across the classroom, curriculum and senior leadership, including roles as a head teacher, Director of Studies and HSC marker.

She has also partnered with the NSW Education Standards Authority on syllabus design and curriculum development.

In her current role, Ms McDonald helps lead teaching and learning across Catholic schools throughout the Diocese of Lismore.

Speaking to the ABC following the announcement, Ms McDonald said she felt  honoured by the national acknowledgement.

“It’s quite a humbling experience to receive that recognition when you have a lifetime and a lifetime of career where you’re actually in service of others,” she said.

Recipients will attend a ceremony at Government House in the coming months to receive the insignia of their award.
