An accused toilet video suspect remains on bail in the community after appearing before the courts four times in less than two weeks, including over two alleged breaches of his bail conditions.
Shane Roy Jones, 50, returned to court on Tuesday after police alleged he breached a curfew condition attached to his bail while staying in emergency accommodation in Grafton.
The latest appearance adds to a remarkable court timeline that began after police alleged Jones secretly filmed women inside public toilets at Tamar Village shopping centre on May 28.
Jones, who is a convicted child sex offender according to court documents, first appeared before Ballina Local Court on the toilet filming charges and was granted bail.
Police allege Jones used a mobile phone to secretly record women from an adjoining cubicle inside the public toilets at Tamar Village shopping centre on May 28.
Court documents stated 11 women were captured in the footage, although not all of the alleged victims had been identified by police when Jones first appeared before the court.
The following day, police attended the Hi Craft Motel on River Street, Ballina, where Jones was staying, and later alleged he had breached his bail conditions by possessing a camera-related device.
Jones returned to court and was again released on bail.
Days later, Jones was allegedly assaulted by masked men at the motel and was taken to Lismore Base Hospital for treatment.
He appeared before the court again on Sunday, where Acting Judge Goodwin condemned the alleged vigilante attack.
“The community should not take the law into their own hands,” the judge said.
“The rule of law always should be enforced and our system respected.”
The matter returned to court on Tuesday after police alleged Jones breached a curfew condition requiring him to remain at his Grafton motel accommodation between 5pm and 8am.
The court heard police located Jones at Lismore Base Hospital about 9pm, outside the permitted hours.
Jones’ solicitor said his client continued to attend the hospital for medical treatment related to injuries suffered in the alleged assault and had experienced difficulties arranging transport back to Grafton.
The magistrate found the breach had been established but accepted there was a reasonable explanation and continued Jones’ bail.
Jones remains on bail and is due to return to Ballina Local Court on July 16.
No findings have been made in relation to the toilet filming allegations.
Jones has not entered pleas and his solicitor has previously indicated the charges may be contested.
Police investigations into the alleged assault at the Hi Craft Motel are continuing.
