A man accused of secretly filming 11 women inside a Ballina shopping centre toilet has pleaded guilty to all charges against him.

Shane Roy Jones, 50, entered guilty pleas in Ballina Local Court on Thursday to 11 counts of intentionally recording an intimate image without consent and one count of possessing a prohibited drug.

The charges stem from an incident at the public female toilets at Tamar Village on May 28, where police alleged Jones used a mobile phone to record women without their knowledge or consent.

Appearing via audio visual link from Clarence Correctional Centre, Jones formally admitted the offences before the court.

The case attracted significant community attention due to the nature of the offending, the number of women affected and the public location where the filming occurred.

Jones had previously been staying in government-funded emergency accommodation at a Ballina motel while on bail. During that period he was assaulted in what appeared to be a vigilante-style attack.

He was later moved to motel accommodation in Grafton, where the owners asked him to leave. Court records also show he breached his curfew before bail was ultimately revoked.

While the Ballina charges relate to recording intimate images without consent, the 50-year-old has an extensive criminal history dating back almost two decades.

In 2007, he was sentenced in Maroochydore District Court to six years’ imprisonment after breaking into a Coolum home and sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl while her mother slept.

In 2018, he was sentenced in Brisbane District Court to seven years’ imprisonment after being convicted of offences including acts intended to disfigure, deprivation of liberty, assault and torture.

The 2018 offences involved the torture of a victim who was burned during a violent assault following an argument.

Jones is a registered child protection offender .

He will reappear for sentencing at Ballina Local Court on July 30.
