
Police operation closes Ballina street as wanted man arrested

A man has been granted bail after a Ballina street was closed during a police operation that ended with his arrest on Tuesday night.
Douglas Darcy Pearce, 34, appeared before Judge S Wills in the Local Court’s Bail Division on Wednesday via video link from custody.
Police attended a unit on Swift Street about 9pm on Tuesday to arrest him on two outstanding warrants.
Officers attempted to speak with the man, who allegedly failed to comply with police directions.
Following negotiations, he was arrested and taken to Ballina Police Station, where the warrants were executed.
He was charged with six offences, including intentionally choking a person with recklessness, attempting to stalk or intimidate with intent to cause fear of harm, having goods in personal custody suspected of being stolen, dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, and two counts of possessing a prohibited drug.
Judge Wills granted strict conditional bail that require him to be of good behaviour, report to Ballina Police Station twice weekly, reside at an address in the 2477 postcode area, not contact the protected person or any prosecution witnesses except through a lawyer, and not consume alcohol or take illicit drugs .
The court also imposed an enforcement condition allowing police to require him to provide an oral sample for drug or alcohol testing at his residence up to four times a week.
In a separate matter, court records show Pearce is also the subject of an interim Apprehended Domestic Violence Order for the protection of a woman, which is due to return to Tweed Heads Local Court on June 29.
The new charges are allegations and remain before the courts.
The matter is due to return to Ballina Local Court for mention on Thursday, July 16.
