Some Ballina pub regulars who enjoy a quiet beer at the Aussie have unexpectedly found themselves in the spotlight as stars of an award-winning photography project.

Ballina photographer John Bortolin has been named Artist of the Year at the Brisbane Pride awards, recognised for his Manscapes photography project, which celebrates the male form while raising awareness and funds for men’s mental health.

And most of the men featured in the award-winning project had never got their gear off for a professional photographer before.

Instead, Bortolin has found much of his talent among the regulars at the Australian Hotel in River Street, where he often spots potential future stars while enjoying a drink himself.

Over the years, a number of local men have swapped bar stools for beaches, headlands and bush settings, becoming unlikely stars of the annual Manscapes calendars.

“They’re just everyday blokes,” Bortolin said.

“A lot of them had never modelled before in their lives. Many were nervous at first, but once they understood the message behind the project and saw the finished images, they were incredibly proud to be involved.”

Bortolin launched Manscapes in 2016, combining his love of photography with a desire to challenge stereotypes around masculinity and encourage conversations about men’s mental health.

His images, many shot on Northern Rivers beaches and coastal locations, capture what many would regard as the essence of Ballina Shire itself — relaxed, authentic and deeply connected to the natural environment.

The annual calendars celebrate not only the male form, but also the laid-back coastal lifestyle that attracts so many people to the region.

Part of the proceeds from calendar sales are donated to ACON, supporting programs aimed at improving mental health and wellbeing.

Bortolin received the Artist of the Year award at the Brisbane Pride Queens Ball, held at Brisbane City Hall earlier this month.

Now in its 65th year, the event is regarded as one of Australia’s longest-running celebrations recognising the achievements and contributions of LGBTQIA+ people, organisations and allies.

“I’m very excited and incredibly grateful to have won Artist of the Year,” he said.

Manscapes has been such a big part of my life for many years, so to have my photography recognised in this way means so much.

“Thank you to everyone who voted for me, supported my work, bought my calendars, followed my journey and encouraged me over the years.

“I also want to thank all the incredible models who have been part of the calendars and helped bring this project to life. I truly appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.”

Bortolin said the award also belonged to the men who had trusted him enough to take part.

“Without them, there would be no Manscapes. They are the heart of the project.”

What started with a camera, a few willing local blokes and a love of Ballina’s coastal landscape has now grown into an award-winning project recognised on a national stage.
