Two men from Ballina have been charged and in custody over serious drug, firearm and weapon allegations.

Daniel Anthony Ziedan, 37, appeared in custody before Acting Judge R Rabbidge in the Bail Division court on Thursday.

Ziedan is facing a string of charges, including drug supply, drug possession, possessing unauthorised pistols, possessing or using prohibited weapons without a permit, manufacturing a firearm without a licence or permit, manufacturing a prohibited weapon without a permit, and unlawfully possessing an Australian driver licence.

Bail was opposed by Police Prosecutor Sgt Nicholas, who argued Ziedan could fail to appear, commit a serious offence or endanger the safety of the community if released.

The court was told Ziedan had a history of drug and driving offences dating back to 2010, with similar offending in Queensland.

The prosecution submitted the alleged offending had “escalated” and was sophisticated, arguing Ziedan had the means and network to obtain and produce weapons alongside ongoing drug-related allegations.

Defence solicitor Mr Skyring conceded the charges were serious, but told the court there were “no actual firearms located”. The court heard the items included gel blasters and air rifles.

The defence also said Ziedan had recently been injured in a serious motorbike crash, suffering a broken femur and complications from blood clots, and was using mobility aids in custody.

Judge Rabbidge refused bail, saying the volume of matters indicated “total ruthlessness and inability to obey the law”.

The judge said community protection was paramount and found Ziedan posed unacceptable bail risks, including failing to appear, endangering the community and committing further serious offences.

Ziedan’s co-accused, Jarrad Hinton, 42, is also before the courts on similar firearm, weapon and drug-related allegations.

Court records show Hinton first appeared on firearm and weapon-related charges on April 5.

He was initially granted conditional bail on some charges, including reporting to Ballina Police Station and complying with a curfew.

Further firearm, weapon and drug-related charges were first listed four days later and bail was revoked.

Across the matters, Hinton is facing charges including possessing unauthorised firearms and pistols, possessing or using prohibited weapons without a permit, possessing a prohibited drug, possessing a digital blueprint for the manufacture of firearms, failing to keep pistols safely, and manufacturing firearms or prohibited weapons without a licence or permit.

The charges against both men remain before the courts and have not been proven.

Ziedan’s matters are listed for mention at Ballina Local Court on July 16.

Hinton’s matters are listed for mention at Gosford Local Court on July 17.
