One of Ballina’s most significant transport projects remains under close scrutiny, with councillors to receive an update on the ongoing planning and engineering work associated with the proposed bridge duplication project at next week’s Ballina Council meeting.
The report outlines a number of technical challenges that continue to influence the project’s scope and cost, including flood immunity, embankment stability, drainage requirements, utility relocations and integration with surrounding road infrastructure.
Council officers say detailed investigations have identified additional works that may be required as planning progresses, contributing to higher estimated project costs than previously anticipated.
The bridge duplication has long been regarded as one of Ballina’s most important transport priorities, aimed at improving traffic flow, reducing congestion and providing greater network resilience across the Richmond River crossings.
The latest report notes work continues with Transport for NSW and other stakeholders to refine designs, identify funding opportunities and finalise the preferred construction approach.
Councillors will be asked to note the report and continue supporting advocacy for state and federal funding for the project.
Council says the bridge duplication project remains critical to supporting Ballina’s growing population and improving access during emergencies, particularly when incidents or flooding affect the existing crossings.
