A year after taking a gamble on starting his own taxi business, Jesse Pamment is making his mark on Ballina’s transport scene.

What started as 8Cabs with one man, one taxi and a promise to provide greater choice has evolved into the distinctly Australian-sounding NeverL8Mate — and Jesse has just reached another milestone.

He has received approval to operate from taxi ranks across the Northern Rivers, meaning passengers no longer need to book ahead.  They can hail him on the street or jump in when they see NeverL8Mate on a rank.

It is a significant step for a small business Jesse deliberately started cautiously 12 months ago.

“I just wanted to do bookings first, and then see how I go,” he said.

A year later, Jesse says the community response has shown there was room for another player.

“It all comes down to reliability.”

Filling a gap

When Ballina News Daily first spoke to Jesse before his launch last August, his proposition was simple — give passengers another choice and concentrate on being available when they needed a ride.

That has meant working some decidedly unsociable hours.

During the week Jesse can remain behind the wheel until around 2.30am, while three local pubs now regularly call NeverL8Mate when customers need transport home.

“I take as many jobs as I can,” he said.

That approach appears to have won customers. Jesse says the business has attracted more than 100 Google reviews in its first year while maintaining a five-star rating.

The business itself has evolved too, with 8Cabs rebranded as NeverL8Mate and Jesse becoming increasingly involved in the local business community.

He has joined both the Ballina and Alstonville-Wollongbar chambers of commerce, while NeverL8Mate was a finalist in this year’s Ballina Shire Business Excellence Awards.

The latest rank approval takes the business another step beyond its beginnings as a booking-only service.

Jesse announced on August 7 that NeverL8Mate had received the green light to take rank and hail work, allowing him to pick up passengers not just in Ballina but elsewhere across the Northern Rivers.

More growth planned

For now, Jesse remains the sole driver, but that could change.

“I’ve got people very interested in driving for me now,” he said.

A maxi taxi is also on his wish list, allowing NeverL8Mate to take larger groups and broaden the service it can provide.

There are still frustrations. Jesse says private vehicles are regularly parked in Ballina taxi ranks, sometimes preventing working taxis from pulling in to collect passengers, and he has raised the issue with Ballina Shire Council.

He is asking drivers to remember the spaces are working taxi ranks and need to remain clear.

But 12 months after backing himself and entering a difficult industry, Jesse is optimistic about where NeverL8Mate is heading.

Ballina passengers now have competing taxi services as well as rideshare operators — a level of choice many regional communities no longer enjoy.

And for Jesse, what began as an idea to provide a more reliable alternative is starting to look like a sustainable local business.
