The man at the centre of this week’s dramatic arrest at Ballina Byron Gateway Airport remains behind bars after appearing in court.

Braden Hardy, 38, appeared in Ballina court by video link on Thursday, facing six charges arising from Monday’s incident at the airport.

The ABC reports Hardy remains in custody, with the case due to return to Ballina court on September 17.

Police allege Hardy attempted to force his way into a restricted area of the airport shortly after 9.30am on Monday.

Officers searched his belongings and allegedly found a knife and a saw before directing him to leave the area.

Police say Hardy returned a short time later and allegedly assaulted a senior constable as officers moved to arrest him.

The officer suffered minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Dramatic footage captured outside the terminal showed at least four uniformed police officers struggling to place Hardy into a police vehicle as he yelled at officers.

He was taken under police guard to Lismore Base Hospital for assessment before being taken to Lismore Police Station and charged.

The six charges include possessing a knife in a public place, failing to comply with a police direction, assaulting a police officer causing actual bodily harm, resisting or hindering police and using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.

Hardy was initially refused bail on Tuesday and remains in custody.

The matter returns to court on September 17.
