Ballina Teen Steps Into Parliament — and Finds His Voice

At just 16 years old, Ballina’s Patrick Jones already has his sights set on Parliament — and after his performance this week, it’s not hard to imagine him getting there.

The Year 10 student from Xavier Catholic College is Ballina’s representative in the 2025 YMCA Youth Parliament, a prestigious leadership program that places young people aged 15–18 into the roles of MPs for a week-long simulation at NSW Parliament House.

Far from being a passive participant, Patrick was appointed Leader of the House, responsible for keeping debates in line with standing orders and helping lead his team in spirited debates.

“It’s unbelievable,” he said from Sydney.

“This program offers such an incredible opportunity  -not just to develop skills, but to really advocate for the issues that matter to us.”

Debating Big Ideas

During the week, Patrick debated major youth-led legislation alongside 88 peers from across NSW.

Topics ranged from increasing women’s representation in medical research to cultural representation for First Nations youth, TAFE reform, and more.

“I’m particularly proud to have taken part in the national matter of public importance on women’s healthcare,” he said.

“It’s an issue every youth parliament across the country is debating this year – and that says something.”

In addition to the national issue, Patrick’s committee focused on Aboriginal Affairs, a topic he says is close to his heart.

A Future in Politics?

Patrick’s political instincts run deep. His grandfather worked for a NSW state minister decades ago, and while his family isn’t politically active now, he’s developed a clear sense of purpose.

“I feel a duty to take action on the things I care about. It’s easy to say, ‘This should change,’ but I think we also need to be willing to do something about it.”

His time at Youth Parliament has only sharpened that resolve.

“Being Leader of the House means I have to stay alert and on top of everything – it’s a real test of discipline, and it’s been amazing.”

Patrick was also quick to acknowledge the diversity of the group: “There are 93 of us here, and it’s one of the most inclusive and diverse cohorts I’ve ever been part of.

“We’ve all come from different walks of life, but we’re united by a desire to make a difference.”

The Real Thing

The week also offered participants a rare opportunity to meet real NSW MPs, who chaired the debates and offered feedback.

Politicians from both sides of the aisle stepped in to help guide proceedings.

“That’s one of the best parts – to have your voice heard by actual decision-makers,” Patrick said.

With several more bills still to be debated and a visit to Government House scheduled, Patrick is making the most of his time ensconced at Macquarie Street and it has cemented his interest in politics as a career.

Could we one day see Patrick Jones MP as the Member for Ballina?

“Maybe,” he says.

“This experience has certainly  confirmed for me that I’d love to serve in public office one day.”
