Breaking barriers: First regional disability health workshops launch in Ballina

People living with intellectual disability in Ballina are being given new tools to take control of their own health, with a series of first-of-its-kind workshops launching this month.

The workshops, to be hosted by disability services provider Northcott, aim to shift the focus from reliance on carers to self-advocacy, helping participants better understand their bodies, manage medical records and speak up in healthcare settings.

Coordinator Rachel Ralph said the program was about empowering people to take ownership of their health.

“It’s about giving them the confidence to ask questions and advocate for themselves, instead of relying on support workers or family members,” she said.

Four sessions across two days

The program will run across May 14 and 15, with four small-group sessions designed for people who identify as having intellectual disabilities.

Numbers will be capped at around 10 to 15 participants per session, ensuring a hands-on and supportive environment.

Two key topics will be covered:

  • Health and wellbeing, including understanding medical issues and navigating appointments
  • Creating a personal health folder, giving participants a practical way to track their own medical history and needs

Participants will receive resources, including a folder to build their own health record system.

Focus on women’s health

A key element of the workshops is a dedicated focus on women’s health, addressing long-standing gaps in awareness and diagnosis.

Organisers say women with intellectual disabilities often face higher rates of undiagnosed illness, particularly in areas such as cervical cancer screening, due to barriers in communication and access.

The workshops aim to break down those barriers by building knowledge and confidence.

Designed and delivered by people with disability

A standout feature of the program is that it is disability-led, with people living with intellectual disability actively involved in delivering the sessions.

That approach extends beyond the classroom.

Local participant Michael Green will take on a key role as the event’s chef, preparing meals as part of the program.

Organisers say inclusion is not just about access, but about creating real opportunities.

“We’re not just bringing someone in to cater — we’re creating opportunities for people with disability to be part of it and show their skills,” organisers said.

Fresh produce for the event will also be sourced locally, adding another community connection.

Life skills at the core

The workshops build on Northcott’s broader focus on life skills, helping people learn practical, everyday abilities at their own pace.

That includes everything from cooking and cleaning to community participation and digital skills.

The health workshops are seen as a natural extension of that philosophy.

Opening doors to business

It’s shaping as a big month for Northcott in Ballina.

The organisation will also host this month’s Ballina Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event, opening its doors to the local business community.

Manager Rachel Ralph said there was growing recognition that businesses could better engage with the disability market.

“There’s real potential for businesses to expand by understanding and catering to people with disability,” she said.

That includes tourism, where Ballina is seen as having untapped potential as an accessible destination.

First time outside major cities

The workshop program has previously been delivered in metropolitan areas, but this marks its first rollout in a regional community.

Organisers hope strong local support will ensure it becomes a regular feature.

Places are still available for the May sessions.
