The family of a 36 year old missing Byron Bay man is appealing for public help as serious concerns grow for welfare as his disappearance is out of character.

Taylor Smith, told Ballina News Daily her brother was last heard from on May 21 during a phone call with her parents where he appeared distressed.

In recent weeks, he had found work on the Gold Coast and had been staying in Southport.

Upon being reported missing police were able to trace his phone to the Southport area, within a broad three to five kilometre range, however he was not located.

Josh Smith is known across Byron Bay and Ballina, where his family says he had been sleeping rough on and off.

They believe he may still be in the Southport area, or may have returned to Ballina or Byron Shire.

Josh does not have a car and his family believes he may be travelling by public transport.

Josh’s sister Taylor told Ballina News Daily her brother had always been active, describing him as a surfer, a first-grade rugby player and someone who had once been deeply committed to fitness.

She said Josh became caught up in drugs last year, but had worked hard to get clean, return to work and rebuild his life.

Taylor said the family fears he may have relapsed before he went missing.

Taylor, who is currently overseas said the distance and uncertainty had made the situation even more painful for the family.

“My brother is a good person who has lost a little hope and his way, but he deserves a chance,” Taylor said.

“Josh has been my protector for the last 33 years and knowing I haven’t been able to help him the way he has helped me has broken my heart.

“Please, if you know anything, reach out.

“Josh, if you are reading this, please come home. We can fix anything that’s broken, but we can’t fix not having you here.”

Josh is described as Australian and Caucasian, about 5 foot 10, with a solid, muscular build, dark brown hair, brown eyes and a beard.

Anyone who has seen Josh, heard from him, or knows where he may be is urged to contact Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Event number E87771807.

Taylor says her brother is “everything to her” and asks for public help to locate him.
