Twins back in custody, putting three Ballina brothers behind bars

An alleged e-bike theft at Tweed Mall this week has landed two Ballina brothers back behind bars — leaving three siblings in custody at the same time.

Police say twin brothers Jack and Luke Oliss, 21, stole an e-bike at the shopping centre on Tuesday this week before fleeing across the border.

Officers later spotted them back in Tweed Heads and chased them on foot.

Police say one of the twins was found hiding in bushes, while the other was located on the roof of a house.

A nearby hotel room search, according to police, uncovered clothing linked to the incident and bolt cutters.

The arrests are significant as the twins were already before the courts and on strict bail at the time.

Their older brother, Kane Oliss, 24, is already serving a jail sentence.

Charges and bail

The latest incident has added to an existing list of charges already before the courts.

Court records show Luke Oliss now faces additional charges including a police chase, driving without the owner’s consent, and getting property by deception.

Jack Oliss is facing a further stealing charge.

Both men are also before the courts on earlier matters, including alleged offences such as possessing suspected stolen goods, carrying a knife in a public place, and possessing drugs.

Both have now had their bail revoked and remain in custody.

Court records show they were subject to strict conditions, including living at an approved Ballina address, observing an 8pm to 6am curfew, and not committing further offences.

Jack was also required to report to Ballina Police Station three times a week.

Police say those conditions were breached.

Police arrested Jack and Luke Oliss at Tweed Mall (above) on Tuesday, it followed their earlier dramatic at Cumbalum (main image) in February, where they were charged and later granted strict bail conditions. Police say those conditions were not adhered to.

What happens next

Luke Oliss is due to appear before Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday, while twin bother Jack is due to front Ballina Local Court on May 28.

Their older brother Kane Oliss remains in custody after being sentenced to 14 months jail earlier this year for offences including stealing, a police chase and driving while disqualified.

He will be eligible for parole from September 11, 2026.

Police say investigations into the twins’ activities in NSW and Queensland, including possible links to other e-bike thefts, are ongoing.
