The hidden strength many women are told to suppress
Care and empathy are often seen as emotional traits, but learning to use them strategically can become a powerful advantage in leadership and business.
That was the message delivered to the Ballina Chamber of Commerce International Women’s Day lunch at the Ballina RSL Club on Friday by public speaking coach Sophia Partland.
Partland encouraged women to rethink how they view emotional intelligence.
“Care and empathy are not weaknesses,” she said.
“They are skills that build trust, connection and influence.”
Partland said many women had been taught to suppress emotion in professional settings in order to appear stronger.
Instead, she urged women to recognise that emotional awareness could make them better communicators and leaders.
“When people feel seen and valued, they engage more,” she said.
“That is where real influence comes from.”
Partland told the audience the key was learning how to give support and care without becoming overwhelmed.
“Healthy giving restores rather than depletes,” she said.

“When we understand our own energy and boundaries, empathy becomes a strength rather than a burden.”
The advice resonated with many in the room, who were attending the annual Ballina Chamber of Commerce International Women’s Day event.
The afternoon mixed inspiration with plenty of fun.
Guests tried activities including pickleball and line dancing, while others joined in a lively singalong.
The event also introduced the inaugural “Prawn Tank”, a Ballina twist on the television show Shark Tank.
Local entrepreneurs pitched business ideas to the audience, who voted for their favourite concept.
Organisers said the aim was to create an uplifting and relaxed environment where women could connect while celebrating International Women’s Day.
