Man charged over Ballina scissors hold-up, released within a day

A man alleged to be responsible for an armed West Ballina servo hold-up was back on the street within 24 hours of his arrest after being granted bail by a magistrate.

Police say the 33-year-old West Ballina man was arrested last Monday (January 12) and remanded in custody.

He appeared before a magistrate the following day, where he was granted conditional bail.

The charges relate to an alleged armed robbery attempt at the Mobil service station on River Street last Saturday night.

Police allege the man threatened the console operator with scissors, demanded cash and stole items before fleeing the scene.

Despite the alleged hold-up occurring on January 10, police did not publicly disclose the incident until a week later, when brief details were posted on social media.

According to police, investigators later reviewed CCTV footage and identified a suspect.

A search warrant was executed at the man’s West Ballina home, where officers allegedly located clothing worn during the incident and stolen goods.

The man was arrested and charged with theft and robbery armed with an offensive weapon.

He is next due to appear before Ballina Local Court on March 12.

The bail decision comes amid ongoing community concern about serious alleged offenders being released back into the community while awaiting court proceedings.

Among those matters shared via the Richmond Police District Facebook page, a man has been over an alleged attempted break-in at a Goonellabah home while occupants were asleep.

Police allege a 21-year-old man entered an enclosed alfresco area in the early hours of September 11 last year, damaging a flyscreen and attempting to access the residence before fleeing when confronted.

Forensic testing later linked the man to the scene, police said.

In a separate incident, police also charged a man following an alleged violent confrontation at Evans Head last Saturday night.

Police allege the intoxicated patron became aggressive when asked to leave the Illawong Hotel, attempted to strike a security guard with a glass, and later resisted arrest after fleeing the scene.

Capsicum spray was deployed before the man was taken into custody.

He faces multiple charges and is due to appear before Casino Local Court on January 22.

Police also charged a 28-year-old man over a series of alleged offences in Lismore and Goonellabah last week.

Police allege the man assaulted his father during an argument at Lismore Square, before taking his father’s vehicle without consent and later crashing it.

Police further allege the man later attended the Shell Station Grocer outlet on Ballina Road at Goonellabah while intoxicated, where he became aggressive and stole food.

He is due to appear before Lismore Local Court on January 19.
